Witness 22: Mohammad Idris

Testimony of Mohammad Idris

My name is Mohammad Idris, age 44. I am a businessman. I am the father of July Movement’s martyr, Maruf Hossain. He was my eldest son. Alongside his studies, he used to help me. He was studying in HSC second year.

During the July Movement, my son participated in Badda area. On 19th July at around 9:30 in the morning, my son left home with his maternal uncle, Faisal Ahmed. After Juma prayers, both of them came home and had lunch together. At 3:30, my son left again to join the movement and later called his uncle Faisal to come as well.

After that, his uncle Faisal called and informed me that on Rampura Bridge, police and BGB opened fire. Around 5:45 Faisal again called me and said that Maruf had been shot in front of Badda Break University. He was then taken to AMZ Hospital.

On the way, when being taken by ambulance, the ambulance was stopped for fifteen to twenty minutes on Rampura Bridge. There, police said that he was already dead and there was no need to take him to hospital. My son’s gunshot wound was wrapped with a gamcha (cloth). One policeman poked the wound with his rifle butt, at which point my son was writhing in pain.

From there, he was taken to Dhaka Medical at 7:15 and at 7:20 the doctor declared him dead. When we wanted to take his body, the hospital authorities refused to release it without a post-mortem. Later, after the post-mortem was done, the body was handed over to us.

The post-mortem was delayed till 21st July because of police obstruction. I want justice against Sheikh Hasina, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, BGB, Police, and RAB. Under Sheikh Hasina’s instruction, on 19th July Redwan fired the shots. This video-evidence has been submitted in a pen-drive, marked as Exhibit-XV. The Investigating Officer has interrogated me.

Cross-Examination (PW-22)

I did not file any case regarding my son’s killing anywhere other than in this Tribunal.
I heard about Sheikh Hasina giving the order to fire from the audio conversation between Sheikh Hasina and Taposh.
What I stated—that Redwan of BGB fired shots on 19th July under the instruction of Sheikh Hasina—I did not hear that directly.
It is not true that Sheikh Hasina did not give the order to fire.
In the video presented, there is no footage showing my son being shot.
It is not true that my son was not shot and killed.
