Telephone conversation between Sheikh Hasina and Dr Maksud Kamal on 14 July at 11:28pm

This is an unofficial translation of the Bengali conversation.

Hasina:* Hello

Kamal:** Apa, Salamalaikum

Hasina: Yes, Walakumassalam

Kamal: All the boys and girls have broken out of the halls. Now four to five thousand of them have gathered around the Raju Sculpture. They’ve also gathered at the Mall Chattar, and at any moment they could attack my residence.

Hasina: I’ve already given instructions for your residence to be protected.

Kamal: Of course, of course!

Hasina: They did it once before…

Kamal: [It looks like] That kind of preparation… they’ve come out carrying sticks.

Hasina: They cannot be allowed to come out carrying sticks — I’ve told the police and the BDR eh BGB… I’m told them to be very alert and— They want to become Rajakars, all of them [are happily chanting that they] are Rajakars. What a strange country we live in.

Kamal: Yes, yes… they’re saying we’re all Rajakars.

Hasina: I’ve hanged Rajakars; now I’ll do the same to you (them). I won’t spare a single one,  I have told [them] [1]. All this time we’ve been — we didn’t say anything, we showed patience — but they’re crossing their limits again.

Kamal: Crossed all limits, extreme limits, extreme… So, Apa, if the campus security could be tightened a bit more… and also around my residence…

Hasina: The campus-arrangements are being made, across all campuses… BGB, RAB, and police-every kind of measure has been taken. I’ve told them to keep people (forces) inside your house as well. There are already some inside… This kind of excess won’t do.

Kamal: It’s terrible—at Bijoy ’71 Hall, Chhatra League boys were beaten up. In a couple of other halls, the same thing happened. Some Chhatra League boys—Saddam, Inan, Shoyon—were at my house since evening. I was getting updates, and I called them in—and they came in. I sat with them and told them to keep the Chhatra League organized in each of the halls, and to inform Dhaka North and South units. While doing all that, thousands of boys and girls have already gathered.

Hasina: What kind of country do we live in? Haven’t you seen what happened to the Rajakars — I had them all executed; now I won’t spare you either.

Kamal: Yes — let this trouble pass for now. After that I will personally round up and expel from the university the main people who are creating this unrest.

Hasina: All of these people must be kicked out… I’m giving the order. Let today pass and then I will arrest them, detain them and take whatever action is necessary. Because in England, when they came out to the street for this kind of student politics — they simply killed a number of them, didn’t they?

Kamal: Yes, yes, yes.

Hasina: There’s no option but to take that action. I have this weakness of showing too much tolerance… and now it’s come this far.

Kamal: This is… we are indeed tolerant. I told the Chhatra League: don’t go and do any of these things. Since it’s a court matter, the court will settle it.

Hasina: No — this is not a court matter anymore; they’ve issued a 24-hour ultimatum.

Kamal: Who in any country would say that to the President — give the President a 24-hour ultimatum!

Hasina: …They’re giving the President a 24-hour ultimatum… there’s a limit to such audacity!

Kamal: Apa, if things get worse I’ll let you know again. But not in the middle of the night — I’ll inform you, maybe within half an hour to an hour if it happens.

Hasina: No problem… I’m always free.

Kamal: Yes, yes, yes — assalamu alaikum.

Hasina:

1. “I have told [them]”. It was earlier mistakenly translated as “I’m telling you.”
