Trial of Sheikh Hasina and others

This trial took place in International Crimes Tribunal no 1 and is known as case no 2/2025

It involved the prosecution of three people:

  • Sheikh Hasina, the leader of the Awami League, and Prime Minister of Bangladesh until 5 August 2024. She is absconding.
  • Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, the Home Minister until 5 August 2024. He is absconding
  • Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun. He is present at the trial, pleaded guilty and gave a confessional statement.

All three were convicted, with Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal receiving death sentences on two charges, and a life sentence on one. Al Mamum received a sentence of five years imprisonment

Charges

Each of the defendants were initially accused of five charges of crimes against humanity. The charges framed against Sheikh Hasina are different from those framed against Kamal and Al Mamun, however there is much commonality.

Both sets of accusations involve charges centring around the
– killing of Abu Sayeed on 16 July 2024, the focus of the third charge;
– killing of six people in Chankerpul on the 5 August, the focus of the forth charge, and the
– killing and burning of six people in Ashulia on 5 August, the focus of the fifth charge.

In addition all three defendants accused of crimes committed pursuant to Sheikh Hasina’s comment on 14 July 2024 about “razakers” (first charge) and about their involvement in the use of drones, helicopters and lethal weapons in the killing of hundreds of protestors (second charge)
