This website is for people who want to understand the post-August 2024 justice process in Bangladesh in the context of dealing with accountability for those responsible for the hundreds of killings and thousands of serious injuries of protesters and others that took place between 16 July to 5 August.
The website’s focus is on the International Crimes Tribunal and the trials relating to alleged crimes against humanity – however it also considers the “murder” and “attempted murder” cases that have been filed by deceased families or the injured, and has resulted in hundreds if not thousands of detentions.
For those who want a good independent non-partisan understanding of what happened between 1 July to 15 August, a good place to start is the Fact Finding report of the UN Office of the High Commission on Human Rights, titled: “OHCHR Fact-Finding Report: Human Rights Violations and Abuses related to the Protests of July and August 2024 in Bangladesh.”
Monitoring the ICT
This website has sought to observe the trials and pre-trial proceedings relating to the various cases that are taking place at the two ICT courts. As part of this, it has hired a handful of law students who have taken daily notes of the proceedings. In addition, we have sought the assistance of defence and prosecution lawyers in providing information on public court documents.
This monitoring follows on from the work of the Bangladesh War Crimes Blog which followed the trials that took place from 2010 in the same ICT relating to crimes that allegedly took place during Bangladesh’s 1971 war of independence.
At present this website receives no outside funding.
Articles
The material on the website accessed using the tabs “ICT cases” and “ICT Trials” comprise accurate reports of what happened during court proceedings, and contain no opinion of any kind.
However, separate from this, this website also contains articles and posts that have been published in different media on Bangladesh’s justice process written by the manager of this site, David Bergman. These are opinions.
